How fires get their names
Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state.
In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire
will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can
also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start –
a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly
naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and
allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name.
For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest
wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was
named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old
Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was
named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.

any update on how close it is to Burgess Cellars or Viader?
This is behind the hospital. I wonder if they were evacuated. I work there and cannot reach any of the residents.
From Spring Mountain we have a clear view. Fire appears above though very close to Viader and Burgess. Hospital does not appear threatened and lights still on (possibly their stand-by systme). Suspect regional phone and power utilities out due to path of fire.
I have a home on South White Cottage road, near Deer Park Road. Can you tell me if the fire is moving up the mountain on that side of Deer Park?
I heard that the fire is moving away from White Cottage. You should be fine.
From Herb Lamb Vineyards, the fire is still burning heavy. Gathered the car fire started across the street from Viader. Viader is fine as of now, keep you fingers crossed.
I'm on the valley floor looking right up at the fires and it seems to be moving away from angwin. i see a bunch of hot spots lower than crestmont. my husband is up on s white cottage at deer park and things must be okay b/c he hasn't called with an update...
Is Old Howell Mountain Road closed?
looks like something just went up, looks like it would be near old howell mtn road on the hennessey side
I talked to the county fire dept, about an hour ago, they said that all access to Angwin from Silverado Trail is blocked, use 128 through Pope Valley to get up to Angwin.
Does anyone have any updates on the Sunnyside/Hospital area?
Hi - any news whether it has moved into the Foothills School area? My parents' home is there.
Does anyone know if the fire is moving south toward Meadowood?
it doesn't look to be moving anywhere right now
I was evacuated at 7:00pm. I live on Sunnyside close to Foothills elementary. We didn't have much time to pack. I don't think the hospital had to evacuate yet.
Here's an aerial video link taken around what appears to be 7pm - it looks like it's swept down from the Deer Park Hairpin turn towards the Foothill school area:

My cousin who lives on crestmont called and said they were having mandatory evacuations up there... any other news about that area???
has meadowood resort been evacuated? how does one get news around here anyway? thank goodness for you people!
Any news on Burgess Cellars?
Given what I can see from the aerial footage, it was pretty high above Meadowood. Parts of Crestmont were hit, including one of the houses there. It seems like while it started right next to Burgess, it moved in the opposite direction. It seems like it was burning the shallow valley between the hairpin turn and Sunnyside Rd. Note that all of this is speculation based on the video footage I linked to earlier taken around 7pm.
I live above St. Helena hospital and have been walking down Gist Rd. to Deer Park Rd. for a better view. The fire at this time appears to be moving south, in the rough terrain, between Deer Park Rd. and Crestmont community. Fire is heading towards Meadowood and the tip of Sunnyside Rd. Evacuations in this area, including Mund Rd. About an hour ago, fire crews were talking about closing Old Howell Mnt. Rd. to the Trail, so people can evacuate quickly in that area due to the lack of turnarounds. Good luck to everyone.
Have been watching and following this fire all evening. It appears that Crestmont has been saved. It looks "backlit" with fire, but not on fire. I think the only homes lost so far are just below the Staples Ridge homes just uphill from the hair pin turn. Meadow Wood has not been evacuated. We are keeping a close tab there because we have a family home that shares the property line. It appears that the fire is moving toward Conn Damn area.
I am in Angwin and I heard they might close the road to Pope Valley so they can keep it available to emergency crews, but effectively stranding us on the the mountain. I know we are ok for now, but fires can change quickly. Imagine if we had 200 to 800 more homes!! Anyone else hear that all roads would be cut off?
Mund Road was being mandatory evacuated 15 minutes ago. One mile east of Deer Park/Silverado.
Better link to the 7pm video - they've replaced with a slideshow on KTVU's site:
http://www.ktvu.com/video/17691662/index.html
check out cbs5.com for some more footage and reportage...so far people on the north side of Deer Park Rd are ok.
Any update on the fire?
30% contained. seen new plumes of smoke in the area.
Any updates on the fire or the status of Deer Park Road?
Anyone know if Napa Valley Upper College is affected?
http://www.fire.ca.gov/index_incidents_deer.php
just back from up Deer Park Rd. past the Agwin Advantist Elementary school -- it's VERY windy up there and winds are increasing -- lots of new smoke plumes -- dangerous situation still for sure -- 100s of CDF everywhere!!! Thank you all firefighters! Stay safe.
These updates have been fantastic, everyone stay safe.
I made comments easier by turning off the word verification and using smaller pop up box
Hi all - they're letting folks back into their homes in the Sunnyside neighborhood, and it appears to have escaped any damage. It looks like they got it under control.
